Numb3r

This is probably one of those projects that I made just for myself. It converts numbers to letters and tries to form words so you can easily memorize large numbers. I got to play around with a bunch of different means so I learned a lot.

The Burguer Invasion

The general feeling in Porto was that burguer places were opening left an right. We decided to investigate and created a pretty timelapse. Special thanks to João Antunes on this one.

Sentiment Analysis (PT-PT)

I was part of a startup where one of the jobs as a datascientist was to create a Sentiment Analysis Engine for Portuguese. This is a series of post I did related to that.

O Preço certo em votos!

A visualization on how much money is spent in each election by each political party. Instead of the usual visualizations we decided to compute the ratio of money spent by elected politician.

Parl2Vec

A Word2Vec implementation over 10 milion sentences from the Portuguese Parlment (since 1976). You choose a word and it sugests similar words. It ended up being a nice way to see what topics are related within the political sphere.

Quarenta anos de Abstenção

A simple visualization of the impact of abstention along the last forty years, in Portugal. Another project from Transparência Hackday.

Master's Thesis

A collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University on an incredible AI system called NELL. We studied how a new field of machine learning called metalearning could fill a gap in this AI's self-reflection capabilities.

Puré de Notícias

Made in a sunny afternoon at Transparência Hackday this simple twitter bot fetches daily news and mixes them up to create absurd, but often funny, false ones. (Portuguese only)

Totonome

This was a collaboration with the really nice people at Transparência Hackday. I focused more on the logic and left everything else to them. It's a really cool example of what can be accomplished with open data. (Portuguese only)

The Mansion

When my parents decided it was time to move out I decided to lend them a hand. I designed/built the website, took the photos and helped with the text. If the house is sold I will probably place the theme on github.

Death Scraper

A basic python web scraper to extract data from E-mortality surveillance from a really awful government site (link here). The information there was hard to read and hard to get to. This was done at a meeting of Transparência Hackday Portugal.

This Website

This probably goes without saying, but I made this website. From scratch. The old website was seriously outdated and not responsive enough. I made this using only bootstrap and jquery.

Clapp

A fake promotion page for a ridiculously useless app that I never created. I tried to make it as visually realistic as possible. You wouldn't be able to tell from it, but APPlause technology is not a real thing.

Jumigurumi

I helped to create the blog, the Facebook page and the logo. Most photos on the blog were taken by me but nothing on the blog was touched by my hand. I am allowed some constructive feedback on the making of the toys/dolls if I behave properly.

Ng-voice

This was the second directive I created, ever. I was going to use it for something else but I never got around to it. Basically you add the directive "voice" to any link and you can now access its href by shouting whatever text is inside it.

KeepInTouch

This was the first project for an actual client and I got to play the role of project manager. There was a lot of work to be done and managing a team of 6 revealed itself to be a time-consuming process.

Drag & Sub

I was tired of manually fetching subtitles so I did what any programmer should do... create an app for that. You just drag your movie into the browser and it searches for the matching subtitle automaticaly.

Bioterium

When we were asked to pick a problem to solve I decided to kick it up a notch and contacted the lovely people at ICBAS animal facility and asked if they needed a management software. This would later become Bioterium. For a quick video demo click here.

SpotIt

Originally this was to be a community based radar detection app. It seemed a bit shady so I ended up broadening its concept to include traffic jams and other events. I eventually created it for a school project, but I was not completely proud of the result. Lovely logo though!

Seteventos

I made this website for my Aunt's kindergarden. It was the first time I created a layout from scratch and I think I did an "ok" job for the time. It gave them a bit of edge against the competitors whose pages are just impossible to use.

Cellwall

This was my first paid job as a web developer. It was made for the Cell Wall meeting in 2010 which accounted for more than 300 participants. I had to deal with all kinds of people and it was a really rewarding experience.

Bquimica

I started this website to help me and my fellow students at FCUP share material (like past exams and class notes). I am no longer involved in the project but it still widely used by biochemistry students.

Master in Informatics and Computing Engineering at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto

At college I have learned a lot of programming languages (from C++ and Java to Prolog, PHP and everything in between). I have always tried to push myself and pick classes for their appeal rather than to go for an easy grade. Some of these classes included Parallel Computing, Critical Systems, Network and System Services, Data Mining, Mobile Computing and Computer Vision.

I gave this a shot before admitting to myself that I belonged to engineering. I ended up leaving mid-semester so I could join FEUP.

Biochemistry
(2006 - 2009)

First Degree in Biochemistry at Faculdade de Ciências do Porto and Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar

This is where it all started. I went into this course with high expectations and wanting to improve my knowledge on plants. Even though this degree was mostly orientated to human/medical biochemistry I bare no regrets on my decision. I ended up doing my (short) internship in a biology lab where I tried to create a genetically altered tobacco plant that produced a protein from human saliva. Pretty cool right? You can download my final report here (in Portuguese).

Ants

I have loved ants since I was a kid. I had some ant colonies in the past but now I don't have the space or conditions. Did you know that male and fertile female ants have wings for a short time so they can mate in the air? How can you not love those little devils...

Plants

This hobby is as old as the last one. I started by keeping some bonsais in my parents and as I grew up i moved onto medicinal and aromatic plants. At the moment due to lack of space I only keep a couple of aromatics which I use on the kitchen.

Cooking

I started to love to cook when I moved out and have been loving every bit of it. I have been learning with friends and family and fine tuning it with the help of a little thing called the internet. If you behave I might even invite you for a nice gourmet lunch.

Photography

This is one of my newest hobbies. I know the very basics of photography thanks to a couple of friends that work in the business and I find it fascinating. In the long run I expect this skill to help me improve my web design.
